Episode 3: Shafts of Light

Multiple Countries

God rays are one of the unique aspects of reality that many artists wait for. Shafts of light streaming down from the sky, through clouds, trees, windows supplement natural light to add atmospheric drama to the scene.

When I watch movies or analyze staged images, I marvel at how directors plan the lighting. Light itself is invisible, unless you strategically incorporate reflective surfaces to carve shadows and highlights. Directors master the behavior of light to add the perception of dimensionality. They have the complete control of getting the light precisely where they want it.

I have waited for hours, days observing natural light, and planned trips to catch a glimpse of natural beauty. When “it” finally happens, there is a striking silence and a feel of ecstasy. “It” is that special moment that carves your memory, like golfers, who remember every shot they hit. In similar fashion, a good day in nature or on the golf course, is a return ticket. A bad day, believe it or not, is also a return ticket, as self knows that “I can see or do better”.

I have witnessed special light in the Cypress Swamps ,created magical light in Sri Lanka. The learning curve might feel steep, unless you are at the right place at the right time!

Enjoy the Shafts of Light!
